Diesel Generators: Striking a Balance for Readiness and Run Hours Minimisation

Diesel generators remain essential for mission-critical backup power, yet increasing environmental constraints and permitting limits demand a reduction in maintenance run hours and associated emissions. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of traditional exercise regimes and questions whether frequent low-load testing meaningfully improves reliability.

Through a subsystem-level review of engine, fuel, lubrication, starting, cooling, alternator, and aftertreatment systems, the study demonstrates that shorter, targeted testing strategies can maintain operational readiness while significantly reducing fuel use, emissions, and operating costs.

The paper proposes an optimised, evidence-based approach to generator testing that balances resilience, compliance, and sustainability objectives.
