AWS has, so far, often been seen as a very positive driver by European co-location companies. Not only have they taken space in co-lo sites in key cities but, as they increasingly diversify from Dublin, have taken much larger amounts of space from co-location companies. Although often one of the most aggressive of the cloud companies in terms of term length and conditions, they have also been seen as a magnet for other co-location customers and their ability to be a platform for hybrid cloud. The nagging concern is whether they will increasingly become competitors with co-location providers. There are many barriers to this, from user desire for hybrid cloud to security to reliability to co-location players’ eco-systems and expertise. However, co-lo players should be in no doubt as to the enterprise ambitions of AWS, and watch their plans carefully.
